The year 2014 witnessed quick development of Chinese energy storage sector, the groundbreaking of Shanghai Chongming Island Sodium-Sulfur Energy Storage Station, the operation of BYD 20MW/40MWh globally largest user-side Fe battery energy storage station and the construction of PV power stations in off-grid regions, China is emerging as the world’s largest energy storage market. Besides, as the operation of peak-shaving and frequency regulation pilot projects in US and Europe as well as quick growth of residential energy storage and mircrogrid in Asia-Pacific regions, energy storage technology is used more and more in the world.

中国储能网战略研究中心近日在全国部分示范项目调研中发现,我国的储能应用主要体现为:东北地区以风电储能为主(如辽宁法库卧牛石风电储能项目等);华北地区主要以风电储能、分布式发电及微电网储能为主(如:国家风光储输张北示范项目等);西北地区以离网型分布式发电和微电网储能为主(如曲蔴莱离网光伏电站、祁连离网光伏电站及玉树州无电地区电力建设独立光伏供电工程等);华东地区以海岛微网及分布式发电储能项目为主(如舟山东福山岛风光柴储能项目与莆田湄洲岛储能电站项目等);而华南地区则以配电网的储能应用为主(如:南网宝清储能电站、东澳岛微网电站及三沙市微网项目等)。
According to the investigation of the Center for Strategic Studies of ESCN, the energy storage application in China has the following features: wind-energy storage projects in Northeast China; wind-energy storage, distributed generation and microgrid energy storage projects in North China; off-grid distributed generation and microgrid energy storage projects in Northwest China; islanded microgrid and distributed energy storage projects in East China; distribution system-energy storage projects in South China.

据中国储能网战略研究中心统计显示,截至2014年8月,全球累计实施储能项目340个。其中,中国累计运行、在建及规划的电力储能项目(不含抽水蓄能电站项目)装机容量近80MW。根据最新预测,到2020年,以输出功率计,全球储能系统累计安装量将达11.3GW。
According to the Center for Strategic Studies of ESCN, as of August 2014, there are 340 energy storage projects implemented in the world. Among of them, the installation capacity of energy storage projects that in operation, under construction and planning is nearly 80MW(not including pumped storage projects). It is predicted that by 2020, the global installation capacity of energy storage will reach 11.3GW by output power.

Before the release of suportive policies for energy storage price, the Chinese energy storage sector is looking forward to the strong support from national strategic level towards energy stprage proejcts. In recent months, the Ministry of Science &Technology and National Energy Administration developed industrial investgation and espert symphthiums in terms of energy storage one after another, thus energy storage technology is expected to open a new chapter in national “13rd Five-Year Planning” for energy and sicnece & technolgoy.

Energy storage technology research, application and demonstration as well as comprehensive benefit evaluation have been the hot topics of government, scientists and the industry. It’s very easy and clear to calculate the primary investment in energy storage station, but still difficult to make clear of the cost for operation, maintenance and depreciation, bringing great challenge for the commercial operation of energy storage technology.
